*This program accompanies Cruel and Unusual Comedy: Astonishing Shorts from the Slapstick Era.

Trains were a symbol of speed and a popular silent-comedy prop for wrong-way treks, missed connections, and last-minute rescues. Comics straddling the third rail include Al St John, Mack Swain, Glenn Tryon, and Spec O’Donnell.
